Fountain House successfully addresses the devastating impact of serious mental illness. Founded in New York City in 1948 with the belief that people living with mental illness can be active participants in their own and each other’s recovery, each year Fountain House welcomes over 1,600 members to contribute their talents, learn new skills, access opportunities, and forge new friendships. As a recipient of the 2014 Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Humanitarian Prize, Fountain House received tremendous public recognition for its ability to help those living with serious illness reclaim their lives and realize their potential.
Receiving the prestigious $1.5 million Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Humanitarian Prize prompted Fountain House to reexamine its fundraising strategy to in order to best utilize its available resources and increase program impact. In support of this, Changing Our World partnered with Fountain House to conduct a review and assessment of its current development function to determine the structure and strategies needed to increase private funding for the organization.
Together, Changing Our World and Fountain House created the structure, systems, and process to establish an effective development function designed to help the organization diversify fundraising revenue, achieve its philanthropic potential, and further its mission. Beyond the initial scope of work, Changing Our World continued working with Fountain House, providing on-site strategic counsel and assistance to the development team in order to push forward the recommendations outlined in the development plan as well as providing high-level strategic fundraising counsel to the organization’s key leadership and staff.
